Now, honestly I like the functionality of the Weiders better than the Bowflex, but the truth of the matter is that the Bowflex setup allows for a lot more weight configurations:

BowFlex: Weight Settings in pounds: 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, and 52.5 pounds.
Weider: 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50.

The Weider’s have some plastic parts on their Speed Weight system. I can’t see the plastic parts surviving forever, but who knows. You certainly don’t want to be banging the ends of the weights together, as I am apt to do whenever doing dumbbell presses. If any part of this system goes, I’ll be sure to post an update review. Three weeks so far, and no problems.

The weights are definitely bulky. From end-to-end, they measure just under 18 and a half inches long each. You’ve got about 5 inches of handle to grab and each end is about 6 and a half inches. So they’re gonna bump every now and again as your using them.

Great all-purpose bench

I have an older Gold’s Gym bench and as my workouts continued was looking to upgrade to a more substantial piece of equipment. Was going to get a much more expensive bench when I ran across this on Craig’s List for $175.

Evidently they were offering this bench in combination with adjustable dumbbells and the seller had never even opened the box on this. Reading all the positive reviews here I decided this bench was in my “sweet spot” for quality, capability and price.

Pros

  • Very substantial and firm
  • Comfortable seating with thick, padded and stitched vinyl covering
  • Extremely easy to adjust
  • Numerous position options
  • Firm support at every place on the bench
  • I am 5’10.5″ tall and the height is perfect

Cons

  • Large Space between seat and back when flat or declined (I roll up a towel and put in the space)
  • Can’t do reverse crunches because you can’t lock the seat in place to pull on it. (Kept the Gold’s Gym bench for this)
  • Doesn’t seem to be easily movable if you need to put it away and get it out a lot. (Not a problem for me)
  • Can’t add accessories for leg or curl work like others I was considering

Summary

I could not find the perfect bench for what I thought was a reasonable price and this seems to be the best for the money. It’s quality seems to be a cut above others in this price range and I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a high quality piece of equipment for their home workout.

My only workout equipment!

In the past I had a weight bench that had a squat rack and a ton of attachments. Leg extension. Leg curl. Lat tower for pulldowns and tricep extensions. A bicep curl extension.

It was a fairly nice piece of equipment. I have have been in a smaller apartment for the last three years. There was no room for the weight bench.

I decided on the Bowflex dumbbells. I love them. I can still use a fold away bench for incline and regular benches.

Triceps I hit with lying tricep extensions. Delts I hit with military presses or flys. Legs get hit with squats and straight leg dead lifts. Back gets nailed with rows and biceps get regular, hammer or preacher curls.

How have they held up after three years? Perfectly.

I have never had one issue with these working out three to four times a week for three years. Never had a problem getting them back into the stand. Never had a plate NOT pick up.

If it weren’t for these I’d have to join a gym and due to time constraints I really can’t do that. I can throw in a quick half hour weight session after dinner and then I’m off to bed.

Quick. Convenient. Expensive….yes but worth it. I’ve never dropped mine so that’s probably why I’ve never had an issue with them. You can’t toss them around like regular dumbbells.

They have given me years of service and hopefully many more. Highly recommended.
